Something to consider:
I am home more often than not and am therefore able to spend much more time interacting with my Savannah Monitor than people who go away to work or are always away from home. If you are unable or unwilling to spend a lot of daily quality care with your pet/s you might want to consider something else. If you are expecting a puppy dog friendly Savannah Monitor you must be willing to spend time interacting & establishing trust. |
Approximate Age: 10-11 months.
|
I do NOT recommend you purchase a Savannah Monitor if you:
...are inexperienced with reptiles. (This is not a good choice for beginners.)
...are unable or unwilling to spend at least 2-3 hours a day interacting with your pet.
...are concerned about the food bill. (These guys grow quickly, eat lots, and get big.)
...are unable to provide a LARGE space/ home/ cage for your pet.
(These guys need lots of space to roam.)

I bought my Savannah Monitor from a local pet store that normally has a fairly good selection of interesting reptiles. I first saw this particular Monitor when he was very young. I considered buying him but was unsure of how to care for such an animal. I spent the next few months doing research on various species/types of monitors and other large lizards with no real intent in mind but to further my knowledge.
He was approximately 8-10 months old when I finally purchased him. (photo above left)

Although I came across some well written and informative articles I still had unanswered questions. To me these questions were quite basic but seemed to be absent from many sites. I will try to address as many of these questions as I can. It is my hope that with this information you will be able to put together a more complete view on what to expect when it comes to caring for one of these large lizards.
Please Note:
Despite any information you may glean from my experience/s please be aware that I am NOT a vet. Nor am I qualified to diagnose a health issue related to one of your reptiles. Please take your pet to a reliable vet who can treat your animal properly if you experience unusual behaviour or suspect illness.
